· The complexity of the microscopic world is something scientists have investigated for centuries. And because of innovations in biotechnology, we have been able to reach a complex understanding of how bacteria and viruses impact us. This allows us to develop new treatments to decrease the amount of human deaths attributed to microorganisms.

[ˈso͞opərˌbəɡ]
"a pathogenic microorganism and especially a bacterium that has developed resistance to the medications normally used against it"
WHAT ARE SUPERBUGS?
Superbugs, also known as antibiotic-resistant bacteria or antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, are bacteria that cannot be killed by one or more types of antibiotic. The ability to survive the use of antibiotics, or become resistant to them can become a problem as a result of many factors. The most prominent being the over prescription of antibiotics, prescribing antibiotics innappropriatly (such as to treat a cold virus), and antibiotic use in livestock.
Additionally, many medical procedures such as surgery require the preventative use of antibiotics to reduce the chances of fatal infection. The use of these medicines accelerates the rates in which bacteria become resistant to antibiotics. Causing these superbugs to run rampant in places like hospitals and nursing homes.

WHO IS AFFECTED BY SUPERBUGS?
Superbugs are a global threat. People from low income countries, all the way to technologically advanced epicenters are at risk of contracting an antibiotic resistance related infection. Many attempts to lower the diversity of these bacteria have been recorded, but an action plan on the worldwide level is necessary. The consequences if we do not unite to fight superbugs, could be devastating, and widespread. Affecting economic, social, and medical prospects like never before in the medicine industry.
HOW CAN WE FIGHT THIS?
In this video, David Brenner discusses how the loss of his friend to an antibiotic- resistant illness inspired him to find a cure. He suggests that light can be used as an effective way to kill superbugs. Although it will still require much more extensive research and testing until this method could be used safely.
POSSIBILITY OF TREATMENT
The highest-priority group of bacteria known as CRE, nicknamed "nightmare bacteria", kills up to 50% of those who are infected.
